I used to love anime. I can’t really describe the way I felt about it, except that I was definitely obsessed – a true anime otaku (a fan, from the Japanese for “one with the house”).
It all started innocently enough, when I went over to my cousins’ house and happened to catch them while they were watching a new TV tape series: some of you older readers may remember Flame of Recca, or Recca no Honoo. From then, it progressed to such shoujo (Japanese for “girl”) fare as Fushigi Yuugi and classics like Rurouni Kenshin. I even dipped my toes into more offbeat series like Gravitation.
But soon after Anime Expo 99 the rigours of high school had to be dealt with, and I never got back into my marathon sessions of entire-52-episode-DVD-set watching (the best way, I assure you, of watching Fushigi Yuugi).
However, there were legions of new fans to take my place, especially as anime became mainstream – Pokemon and Dragonball eventually gave way to Adult Swim and such great shows as Inuyasha and Full Metal Alchemist. And now there are feeds reviewing series with production values that would have knocked me to the floor back "in my day": Shakugan no Shana, Mushishi, and Noein.
I’m really glad to see such wonderful feeds as the ones below, informing the English-speaking world about shows even as they go on air in Japan. It makes me proud to have been a fan. Maybe I’ll get back in to it some day. I think I have an unwatched episode of Naruto somewhere around here…
