A few years ago, some of my relatives created a family tree for my father's side. We could only go back a few generations - Eastern Europe was a quagmire when my family left, and surnames were changed, records were lost.
In other families, however, lineage can be traced back for centuries. The art and science of genealogy not only gives us identity, but it connects us in ways we might never have imagined. With the advent of accurate DNA testing, researchers can even determine when the most recent common ancestor of all living humans walked the Earth.
The sources below bring us resources, personal tales and even podcasts about building family histories. Perhaps you can trace your own roots, or like me, you can read the story of another family and wonder what you would find if you could just figure out in which shtetl your great-great-grandmother lived.

DearREADERS,Two years ago I purchased a bunch of trees, leaves and pumpkin stamps from MyAncestorsFound.com, much to the delight of my grandchildren. We used these stamps with an assortment of colored inks to embellish several ancestor bios I'd drawn up. Ol' Myrt here is constantly looking for ways to involve youth in family...

NOTE from DearMYRTLE: The following text was just circulated to Family History Consultants by FamilySearch. One problem I foresee with keeping data SOLELY online is the fact that the new FamilySearch allows one to see ONLY one's self, and deceased ancestors. Spouses would not be able to see each other's info. The Future of...

Back in May, I blogged about an agreement between NARA and Ancestry that would allow Ancestry to digitize records onsite at Ancestry. I was browsing through the Ancestry blog and apparently that process has begun.
While Ancestry has made digitized copies of previously microfilmed records available in the past, what’s...

NOTE: The following article has nothing to do with genealogy. However, I have written about telephone cost reduction methods before, and some people seem to appreciate the articles; so, I'll publish one more. Do you need your telephone? Is it worth the price you pay for monthly service? I stopped using a regular telephone a...
