I own 56.2 pounds (25.5 kilos) of manga. Titles include the original Japanese edition of DNAngel, English translation volumes of Lovehina and 30-odd Chinese translation volumes of Rurouni Kenshin. And no, I can't read Japanese or Chinese - in the old days of fandom, we used to print out the English translations and read while looking at the manga's pictures.Manga used to be defined as "Japanese comics."  Any true fan would absolutely lose it if they heard that definition. The word "comics" is associated in the U.S. with pale, odoriferous, sexually inept, forty-year-old men. But unfortunately, English just doesn't have a word to describe the beautiful, popular graphi-sizations that exist for all age-groups, from tykes to the elderly. "Comic" just doesn't cut it.And "Japanese"? No longer are manga strictly Japanese. Original Korean (manhwa) and Chinese (manhua) works vie with Japanese ones, not to mention English manga artists like Megatokyo's Fred Gallagher. And all those translated versions I have show how international Japanese manga are these days, so if you need some Clamp in Spanish or some Yuu Watase in French . . . So what is manga today, really?
