To most people, the word “occult” conjures up images of witches and evil-worshippers doing horrible things to people or animals in nocturnal rituals. Which is too bad, because most practicing witches and Satanists are by most accounts law-abiding folk. But if you remember that “occult” simply means hidden, the misconception becomes a little more understandable. People are afraid of what they don’t know. And because of persecution or simple prejudice, for most of human history, it’s been safer for members of minority religions to keep mum about what they do or believe. Take Satanists, for example. I imagine most of us think of Satanists as evil people who worship the ultimate bogeyman. But what do we know about Satanism really, or even about Satan? As author Samuel Butler pointed out, we’ve never heard the Devil’s side of the story: “God has written all the books.”To clear up misconceptions about Satanists, Wiccans, and other folks whose religious beliefs probably wouldn’t pass muster with Reverend Lovejoy, we’ve gathered a number of different voices and sources. We’ve got the latest news from the First Satanic Church, founded by Karla LaVey, the daughter of eminent Satanist Anton LaVey, and programming from Radio Free Satan. We also have Simple Magick, a journal that covers issues and news affecting modern-day witches, Pagans and other occult practitioners.Read on: maybe you’ll find the religion you’ve been waiting for your whole life…Related Top 10 Sources: Christianity | Astrology | Halloween

As I have pointed out before, laws against legally recognized gay marriage unfairly benefit those religious traditions who have a vested interest in GLBT folks remaining second-class citizens. The melding of a civil contract and (mainly Christian) religious ceremony in America has created the erroneous idea that the State...
