Despite having been Chinese for (all of my) 20 years, I hadn’t been to China until this summer, when I trekked into the wilds of the country with my family. And by “wilds,” I mean Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. (Yeah, okay, so I like my creature comforts.)My favorite city of these was Shanghai. The skyline was gorgeous, the people friendly and civilized, the food beyond belief, and - oh, joy! - they had Western-style toilets! That by itself is a reason to go, in Mainland China. But in all seriousness, Shanghai is booming – possibly the most important city in China these days. Why? Because Shanghai is the West of the East - it's NYC in Asia. Only better. The Chinese food is of course to die for, but so is the French cuisine. Fashionistas of Fifth Avenue, make way for the ladies of Nanjing Road. And Gehry - you've got some competition in town. So go and become an expatriate, if only for a week. Or join the long-term club. And enjoy the bidets for me.Related Top 10 Sources: Travelogues | Travel | Asiana

That's right, lots of road closures, stronger than average nationalistic fervour, and even more tat being sold on the streets than normal can only mean one thing: the moment we've all been waiting for is here! The international leg of the relay might have been less than harmonious, and it might be three days later than...
