"It's getting hot in here." Among the environmentally cautious the lyrics from this recent hit song by Nelly take on new meaning. The body of knowledge on climate science has accelerated at breakneck pace over the last two decades. When the UN drafted the Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992, the international community took the plunge into action on an issue of great uncertainty: global warming. The term itself conjures apocalyptic images which have been echoed by such pop culture creations as the film The Day After Tomorrow.
Since the publication of the famed (or infamous) "hockey stick model" study, scientists have been charged with finding a measure of certainty in a very complex system affecting air, sea, land, and life. As a political issue, action on global warming is highly controversial. Much of Washington has shied away from this issue, as seen with President Bush's decision in March 2001 to withdraw the United States from involvement in the Kyoto treaty.
But global warming is becoming the talk of the town, partially thanks to high profile advocates such as Al Gore. His film documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, along with the HBO special Too Hot Not to Handle have brought the issue into the limelight and onto the silver screen. Dive into these "hot" sources to keep up to date on the environmental problem that is literally sweeping the globe.
